COVINGTON, Va (VR) – The Alleghany Cougars Varsity baseball team put together a gutsy and inspiring performance on Monday night, showcasing their skill, chemistry, and determination in a tightly contested 4-1 battle with Floyd County. While the scoreboard favored the Buffaloes, the Cougars out-hit their opponents 6-4 and played with passion from the first pitch to the last. The energy in the dugout, hustle on the field, and leadership from key players made it clear: this Cougar team is something special.
Tyler Jackson turned in a standout performance, doing it all for his team. The senior went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, drew a walk, was hit by a pitch, stole a base, and scored Alleghany’s lone run. On the mound, Jackson battled through five strong innings, striking out five and keeping the Cougars in the game with his steady presence.
Zeke Saville brought the bat to life with two solid hits, keeping the pressure on Floyd County all night. Jalen Raether and Carson Brown each added a hit of their own, with Brown also driving in a crucial RBI. The Cougars’ offense showed patience and grit at the plate, forcing tough at-bats and working their way on base consistently. Raether also contributed on the mound in relief, striking out four batters in just two innings of work, slamming the door and giving Alleghany a chance to claw back late.
The defense made big plays, including a key double play, and despite a lone error, the infield held firm under pressure. Behind the plate, Rilee Webb provided solid catching and leadership, while Landon Arritt and Tanner Hoke covered ground in the outfield and kept runners in check. The Cougars last game of the regular season will be on Wednesday night when they host Wilson Memorial.
