COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – Laughter echoed across the Jackson River Sports Complex on Saturday as Covington Parks and Recreation hosted one of the most exciting family events of the year — Youth Day 2025! With hundreds of families in attendance and sunny skies overhead, the day was all about one thing: the kids.

The festivities kicked off with a warm welcome from Allen Dressler, who thanked the community members, sponsors, and volunteers that helped bring the day to life. Covington Police Chief Chris Smith also spoke to the crowd, reminding everyone why they were gathered. “Today’s not about getting something,” Smith said. “It’s about getting out and having fun!”

And fun was exactly what they got.

From the moment the gates opened, kids of all ages were immersed in a whirlwind of excitement. The wildly popular “Touch a Truck” experience gave young visitors the chance to explore fire trucks, police cruisers, and even construction vehicles — up close and personal. Meanwhile, the petting zoo brought laughter as children got to meet goats, cows, and more furry friends.

But the real star of the day? Mountain Rush Laser Tag, which drew massive crowds and epic showdowns as kids dodged and darted through obstacles.

Local dance groups from Covington brought the stage to life with high-energy routines, cheering and applause ringing out after every performance.

Throughout the event, booths from community organizations and local businesses offered games, giveaways, and resources for families. Volunteers kept the energy high and the smiles going — and at the end of the day, dozens of lucky kids walked away with brand-new bikes and exciting prizes.

One parent we talked to stated this was  “one of the best family days we’ve had,” but the real measure of success? The sheer joy written all over the kids’ faces.

“Youth Day isn’t just an event,” said one volunteer. “It’s a celebration of our future — and today, that future looked brighter than ever.”

Covington Parks and Recreation, take a bow — you didn’t just host a Youth Day. You made memories that will last a lifetime.
