COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – Boys Home of Virginia opened its doors to the community on Saturday for a fun and festive Open House and Community Day. It was a beautiful afternoon packed with activities, treats, and a closer look at everything happening on campus.

Families and friends spent the day enjoying live music, inflatables, farm tours, and a variety of games. Kids loved getting their faces painted, and visitors had fun checking out the exhibits that highlighted the talents and hard work of the Boys Home residents.

Of course, there were plenty of delicious treats to go around — cotton candy, snow cones, hot dogs, nachos, and plenty of cold drinks kept everyone happy.

Many staff members mentioned that a lot of the community isn’t fully aware of everything Boys Home has to offer, so events like this are a great opportunity for folks to come visit, meet the residents and staff, and learn more about the programs and opportunities available.

We had the pleasure of speaking with Louis Sarratt, trades instructor about what his class offers. “They can take these skills such as carpentry and masonry and expand on that knowledge in other careers” Sarratt stated. The class is currently working on building a tiny house, that will be used for staff housing. Sarratt was very proud of his students when showing us all of the pieces that have been constructed waiting to be placed together onsite.

The event wasn’t just about having fun; it also gave visitors a chance to see firsthand how Boys Home provides a supportive, nurturing environment for young men to grow and succeed. Staff and residents were excited to share their stories and show off all the exciting things happening at Boys Home.
