ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (VR) – The Alleghany Cougar Varsity baseball team dropped a tough one on Wednesday evening, falling to the Northside Vikings by a final score of 17-6.
Northside wasted no time getting on the board, erupting for six runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Vikings strung together a series of hits, including an RBI single by Brett Taylor and a two-run knock from Jake Theis. Aries Oliver followed with a double to bring in another run, and a fielding error by Alleghany allowed the sixth run to score. The Cougars were held to one run over the first three innings but found their rhythm in the top of the fourth. Alleghany plated five runs in the frame, sparked by a sacrifice fly from Garrett Carper. Carson Brown grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored another run before Trey Cook delivered a two-run single. Rilee Webb capped off the rally with an RBI base hit to bring the Cougars within three runs at 9-6.
Northside, however, responded immediately in the bottom half of the fifth with a six-run outburst of their own. Justin Tucker drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Theis added a three-RBI single, and Oliver launched a two-run home run to left field, extending the Vikings’ lead to double digits. Tucker Phillips started on the mound for Alleghany, allowing six runs (five earned) in one inning of work. Carper entered in relief and pitched 3.2 innings, giving up 11 runs (five earned) on 10 hits while striking out two.
At the plate, Trey Cook led the Cougars with two RBIs, while Brown posted a 2-for-3 performance. The Cougars will need to reset and focus on Friday’s game, when they travel to Radford.
