What Residents Should Know

During hydrant flushing, residents in affected areas may experience temporary discoloration of water and fluctuations in water pressure. This discoloration, though not harmful, may stain laundry. Residents are advised to:

 Check water clarity before doing laundry or using hot water
 If discoloration occurs, run cold water in faucets for a few minutes until the water clears
 Avoid using hot water until the cold water runs clear
 Consider storing drinking water ahead of the scheduled flushing in your area

Why We Flush Hydrants

Hydrant flushing is a critical maintenance procedure that:

 Removes sediment from water mains
 Verifies proper operation of fire hydrants
 Helps maintain water quality
 Identifies weaknesses in the water distribution system

The Public Works Department appreciates residents’ patience during this important maintenance work.

For more information or if you experience prolonged water discoloration, please contact the Public Works Department at (540) 863-6650.
