LOW MOOR, VA (VR) — Alleghany Highlands Public Schools will host a community forum at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, in Curfman Hall at Covington Middle School to discuss a proposed 1% local sales tax that voters in Alleghany County and Covington will consider Nov. 3.

If approved and implemented, the tax would provide dedicated funding for school capital improvements and renovation projects, such as roof replacements, heating and cooling upgrades, and other significant facility improvements. The revenue could not be used for routine operating expenses.

The forum will be held in an informal setting to allow residents to learn more about the proposal, ask questions, and share their thoughts.

“We’ve really enjoyed visiting with local governments and community groups and hearing the thoughtful questions people are asking,” Superintendent Kim Halterman said. “We want to keep those conversations going, make sure people have the facts, and create a welcoming space for everyone to ask questions and make an informed decision on Nov. 3.”

All community members are welcome and encouraged to attend. The forum will be informational in nature and is not intended to influence how residents vote on Nov. 3.
