LOW MOOR – Friday is going to be a big day in Low Moor as both the Alleghany boys and girls basketball teams will be hosting first-round tournament games after they both finished No. 7 in the final Regional High School Basketball Rankings.

After dropping two of their last three regular season games, Alleghany fell from the No. 5 seed to No. 7, but will still host at least one home playoff game barring any upsets from teams seeded higher.

On Friday the Cougars boys team will host the No. 10 seeded Rustburg (Seminole District) in the second game of the doubleheader at Alleghany High School.

The Red Devils enter the tournament having lost five of their last six games.

The winner of Alleghany/Rustburg will play at No. 2 Spotswood on Monday in the regional quarterfinals in Penn Laird.

Other notes from the boys bracket; the reigning regional champions Western Albemarle is the top-seed in the boys tournament. The Warriors knocked off Spotswood in the finals last season. In their first year as a new school in Harrisonburg, Rocktown High School reached the tournament as the No. 12 seed.

In the girls Region 3C basketball tournament the Alleghany girls team is also a No. 7 seed.

The Cougars head into the tournament having won four of their last five games and are also the outright Three Rivers District champions.

Alleghany will host No. 10 seeded Rockbridge County (Valley District) in the first game of the double header at AHS at 6:00 p.m.

The Wildcats are rolling heading into the regional tournament with having won four of their last six games, including an upset win over Turner Ashby who are the No. 8 seed.

This matchup features two schools who will be joining the Shenandoah District this Fall.

The winner of Alleghany/Rockbridge will play at No. 2 Western Albemarle in Charlottesville on Monday in the regional quarterfinals.

Other notes from the girls region; Spotswood is the top-seed in the tournament. Wilson Memorial who had longed been projected as a top-3 seed dropped to No. 5.

It’s going to be an exciting week of the regional tournaments and it all begins with a huge day in Low Moor tomorrow featuring two tournament games. It all starts with the girls game at 6:00 p.m. Show your support for Cougars basketball!
