SALEM – It was a late fourth quarter rally for Glenvar on Monday night as they picked up a Three Rivers District victory following a 62-58 win over Alleghany in Salem.
The game belonged to Brody Dawyot.
Dawyot made critical plays late in the game that were crucial in the victory for the Highlanders as Dawyot scored a game-high 26 points with a dozen of them coming during the final period.
The game itself was a tight-rope throughout, it came down to the wire in the fourth quarter. Entering the final period Alleghany led 41-40.
With less than three minutes remaining Alleghany led 55-54 before Devin Clark delivered his biggest made basket of the game as he connected on a 3-pointer to put Glenvar ahead 57-55 with 2:41 left to go.
All the momentum for the Highlanders would be whisked away as seconds later Bubby Entsminger came back with a 3-pointer of his own as AHS retook the lead at 58-57 with 2:31 left in the game.
The only problem is that would be the last time Alleghany scored as Glenvar held the Cougars scoreless over the final two-plus minutes of the game.
Looking to settle back into the game and regain momentum, the Highlanders missed a 3-pointer, but Dawyot came up with a huge offensive rebound and went right back up with it and made the basket while being fouled as the home crowd was ecstatic. Dawyot would miss the free throw, but the damage was done as the Highlander reclaimed the lead at 59-58.
Following an Alleghany missed shot, Glenvar once again attempted a 3-pointer which was off of the mark, but once again Dawyot grabbed the offensive rebound and again went back up with the basketball and banked it in as the Highlanders took a three point lead at 61-58.
Down only three points with over a minute remaining, Alleghany was still in the game, but committed a costly turnover and gave the ball back to the Highlanders.
However, the Highlanders would do the same thing and turned the ball over. Not before GHS ate up 41 seconds. The defense of Eli Entsminger and Mason Hale got to the ball-handler for the Highlanders and he lost the ball backcourt causing a violation.
With another chance to cut into the deficit or potentially tie the game, Hale had a good look at the hoop, but just misfired on a potential game-tying 3-pointer with only 30 seconds remaining.
Cooper Mullins would seal the win as he connected on 1-of-2 free throws in the final seconds of the game.
The fourth quarter was the difference maker as Dawyot scored 12 of the teams 22 points in the period.
The Cougars trio of Bubby & Eli Entsminger, and Chase DePriest combined to score 50 of the teams 58 points. E. Entsminger scored a team-high 19, while DePriest scored 16, and B. Entsminger added 15.
In the final 2:41 of the game the AHS offense was 0-for-3 and committed one turnover.
Alleghany (14-6, 6-3 Three Rivers) was set to host Patrick County on Wednesday, but that game has been postponed. The Cougars next scheduled game isn’t until next Tuesday at Carroll County.
