The updated Class 3, Region C high school basketball rankings were released on Monday, February 10th with both the Alleghany boys and girls teams remaining steady in their position from last week, but there were a few changes in each ranking.

Alleghany’s boys basketball remained in the top-5 at No. 5 this week, but on their trails are Liberty Christian Academy at No. 6. With the season winding down and the status on points, both of these schools will finish at 5-6, but for who will get which seed will be determined by the final regular season game.

AHS is coming off of a loss to Glenvar on Monday, which plays into next week’s rankings and has no bearings on this current week’s ranking. Both the Cougars and LCA have three games left in the regular season. The Bulldogs have not yet played this week.

Changes in the boys rankings includes East Rockingham leaping into No. 8 after being in the No. 10 spot last week. Rustburg No. 9, Monticello No. 10 each moved down one spot, while Turner Ashby No. 11 and Rocktown No. 12 flip flopped this week.

If the boys season ended today the Cougars would host Rocktown. Last week’s potential playoff matchup was AHS and Turner Ashby.

On the girls side of the regional rankings, Alleghany remained No. 7 this week. The Cougars game on Tuesday was postponed due to the weather.

Turner Ashby who comes into the week at No. 8 are right there neck and neck with Alleghany in the points. The Knights did lose on Monday to No. 2 Spotswood, which will keep the distance AHS has with TA steadily, but with less than two weeks remaining, these two schools will be 7-8 seeds. AHS has three games remaining, while TA has two.

There is a new number one ranked team this week for the girls region. If you noticed above, Spotswood fell from the top rankings despite 14 straight wins and were moved down to No. 2, while leaping them this week to No. 1 is Western Albemarle.

Other changes this week includes a new team into the top-12 as Heritage is now a current playoff team as they entered this week at No. 11, while Fluvanna was bounced from the No. 12 spot. Wilson and LCA flipped No. 3 and No. 4, while Rockbridge and Staunton each moved down one spot from their previous ranking.

Looking and getting ahead of ourselves is a potential second round meeting between Alleghany and Spotswood, should both teams remain in their current position. The two schools met last year in the second-round where the Blazers defeated the Cougars 42-28.

These rankings will change two more times, once more for our pleasure to play potential playoff matchups and the last one will be the official seeding and playoff pairings.
