CLIFTON FORGE — On Thursday, Jan. 30, the Clifton Forge Public Library will host a public presentation titled “Indian Implements.” It will be held in the library’s Michael Armstrong Community Room beginning at 6 p.m.
The program will focus on the historic presence of Native American Indians in the greater Allegheny Highlands region and the stone tools they used in everyday life. This talk and demonstration will be presented by Michael Hayslett and Pete Davis.
Hayslett is a local lecturer, naturalist, and historian, while Davis is a primitive technologist and stone toolmaker from Rockbridge County.
Hayslett will begin the program with an introductory slide show on the basic history of American Indian presence in the Allegheny Highlands region.
After-ward, Davis will present an interactive demonstration of stone tool-making and prehistoric techniques.
Several private collections of American Indian artifacts from the area will also be on display during the program.
Hayslett encourages the audience “to bring their personal artifacts from our region for hopeful identification.”
Following the program, light refreshments will be provided. Admission is free.
“Indian Implements” is the last of three activities sponsored by the Clifton Forge Public Library during January, with a theme of early regional history.
Complementing the theme is Hayslett’s display, “Pioneer Accouterments,” which is being showcased in the library throughout the month of January.
