SEAFORD – Ray McCutcheon Wilhelm, 83, went home to be with our Lord Jesus Friday, April 16, 2010, at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News.
Ray was born in Clifton Forge, and was a former resident of Newport News before moving to York County in 1978.
He served his country honorably during WWII in the U.S. Army at Saipan. He worked for C&O, New York Central, and Norfolk & Western Railroads.
He also owned and operated Atlantic Service Station in Hampton. He retired from NASA in 1989 after 29 1/2 years of service.
Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Josephine Crawford Wilhelm; his parents Chisholm and Lillie Wilhelm; brothers, LaRue Wilhelm, John Wilhelm, Forrest Wilhelm, Edsel Wilhelm, J.W. “Jim” Wilhelm and Boyd Wilhelm; and sisters, Violet Wilhelm; Virginia Thomas, Betty Ann Lally and Hazel Casstevens.
He is survived by his son, Wiley “Keith” Wilhelm Sr. and his wife, Annette of Gloucester; two daughters, Sandra Wilhelm Johnson of York County and Alice Jo Wilhelm Nessar and husband, Daryoush of Chester; brother Preston Wilhelm of Richmond; five sisters, Louise Rayburn of Richmond, Ruby Carroll of Richmond, Aurelia Seward of Waverly, Norma Jean Mathis of California, and Marion Lou Golden of Charlottesville.
He is also survived by six grandchildren, Amber Parrish and husband, Jason of Ashland, Ky., Matthew Johnson of Newport News, Wiley Wilhelm Jr., Chisholm Wilhelm, Claibron Wilhelm and GraceAnne Wilhelm; and three great-grandchildren, Jason Parrish Jr., Dylan Parrish and Taylor Parrish.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Amory Funeral Home, Grafton with the Rev. Bob Collins officiating.
Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
