WARM SPRINGS – Dr. David Smith, superintendent of Bath County Public Schools, has been named a Virginia council member for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement.
Dr. Smith has served as superintendent of Bath County schools for 11 years. Prior to coming to Bath County, he served as assistant principal and athletic director, elementary principal and director of administrative services in Rappahannock County. He also served as a high school principal and director of gifted education in Bedford County.
In his current post, Dr. Smith has led Bath County schools to full Standards of Learning accreditation and division Adequate Yearly Progress status for five of the last six years.
Bath County schools are currently a candidate for AdvancED district accreditation and anticipating a quality assurance review visit in October 2010.
Dr. Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Bridgewater College, a master of music education degree from James Madison University and his doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from the University of Virginia.
Founded in 1895, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement accredits over 13,000 schools and school systems throughout the U.S. and overseas.
Dr. Smith was recognized during Tuesday night’s Bath County School Board meeting.
Also recognized by the school board were Ethel Thompson, who is retiring after 31 years at Millboro Elementary School, and Carol Atkins, who is also retiring after 30 years at Valley Elementary School.
