HARRISONBURG – The defending Valley Baseball League Champion Harrisonburg took it to Covington this past Sunday with a 10-0 7-inning blowout victory at Veterans Memorial Park in Harrisonburg.

The Turks needed only seven innings to get past the Lumberjacks with all 10 of their runs scored came during the first three innings.

Covington was one out away from escaping a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the 1st inning, however, Cam Nelson (1-for-2) crushed a 1-2 pitch over Thomas Marsala (0-for-3) in deep center field that one-hopped off of the wall which cleared the bases to give Harrisonburg an early 3-0 lead.

The Turks would add four more runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning with the big blow coming from Christopher Katz (1-for-3) who hit a hard line drive single up the middle to center field which scored a pair of runs to increase the lead to five runs. Jack Cannizzaro (1-for-2) and Nelson each added RBI’s.

Harrisonburg would add three more runs in the 3rd inning to take a commanding 10-run lead.

It was a rough night at the plate for Covington who went 2-for-24 as a team. The Lumberjacks were no-hit through the first four innings before Chenar Brown (1-for-3) singled to lead off the top of the 5th inning and would be the only base runner to reach in the inning. Dariel Castillo (1-for-2) provided the only other hit for Covington which occurred during the 6th inning.

Landon Lucas (L) suffered the loss for the Lumberjacks after allowing seven runs on three hits in 1.2 innings where he walked a season-high five batters. Luke Wilkerson, who relieved Lucas, struggled on the mound in 1.1 relief innings where he walked three, hit two batters, and allowed three runs. Garrett Darner and Jorge A. Garcia III also made appearances for the Jacks’.

Hudson Rowan (W) earned the win after being nearly unhittable. In his five innings on the mound Rowan gave up one hit in five shutout innings and struck out 10.

The loss dropped Covington to 14-17 overall on the season.
