ROANOKE, Va. (AP) – The American Association of State Troopers has given 171 scholarships worth a total of $114,000 in memory of a slain Virginia Tech student who applied for a similar award.
Heidi Childs and her boyfriend, David Metzler, were found fatally shot in August in a Jefferson National Forest campground parking lot. No one has been charged in the slayings.
Childs had applied for a $500 scholarship from the troopers’ association, which approved her scholarship, but she was killed before receiving it. The group gives scholarships to association members’ dependents. Childs’ father is a 20-year Virginia State Police veteran.
