COVINGTON – The struggles continued for Covington this past Wednesday evening following a 5-1 Valley Baseball League loss to Charlottesville at Casey Field. The game ended after five innings due to rain.
The TomSox grabbed help from Matthew Irwin (L/1-1) in the top of the second inning when Irwin threw two wild pitches that resulted in two of the three runs scored during the inning from the TomSox.
An RBI single from Sam Mummau (1-for-2) extended Charlottesville’s’ lead in the top of the third inning to 4-0.
Covington had put runners on base in the first two innings but were unable to successfully bring them home. The third time around was the charm as Spencer WIlliams (0-for-2) hit into a fielder’s choice which resulted in Quentin Jenkins (1-for-2) to score the Lumberjacks lone run of the game.
Charlottesville would get the run back in the top of the fourth inning to retake a four-run lead at 5-1.
The Lumberjacks would be set down in order in the bottom of the fifth inning, which ultimately wound up being the final outs of the game due to the rain.
Palmer O’Beirne (W) earned the victory after allowing one run on three hits in 3.2 innings. Mummau and Abingdon, VA native Ethan Gibson (1-for-1) provided an RBI each for Charlottesville.
Dariel Castillo (1-for-1), Thomas Marsala (1-for-2), and Quentin Jenkins (1-for-2), each had hits for Covington. Williams had the team’s lone RBI.
In his fifth outing of the season, Irwin fell to 1-1 on the season after allowing three runs on just one hit in two innings. Gabriel Gutierrez appeared out of the bullpen for the Lumberjacks where he allowed two runs on six hits in three innings.
Charlottesville improved to 4-0 on the season against Covington. The two teams will meet up four more times this season.
