Lumberjacks snap losing skid with big road win

HARRISONBURG – How do you snap a five-game losing streak where you have been outscored 56-19 during that stretch, by pounding the defending Valley Baseball League champions?
 
Playing on the road for the third straight night, Covington ended their five-game losing skid with a 9-1 VBL victory over Harrisonburg. 
 
After giving up a run in the first inning, the bats woke up two innings later for the Lumberjacks as the team scored seven runs during the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings before adding two more in the top of the ninth.
 
In the win, Covington exploded with 14 hits. Thomas Marsala (2-for-4), Spencer Williams (2-for-5), Jackson Toberman (2-for-4), Chenar Brown (2-for-4), and Quentin Jenkins (2-for-3) each had a two-hit day at the plate for the Lumberjacks. The Jacks 1-4 batters in their lineup
 
Brown had a big game for Covington as he led the team with three RBI’s, including a two-run single in the eighth inning that helped extend the Lumberjacks lead up to eight runs at 9-1. Jenkins added a pair of RBIs in the Jacks’ win. 
 
Matthew Irwin (ND) drew a no-decision in the start for Covington. Irwin gave up one run on one hit in 3.2 innings where he struck out a pair. Irwin threw 71 pitches during his time on the mound and the walks added up as he allowed four free bases. The right-hander from Texas was an out away in the bottom of the fourth inning from retiring the side in order before he walked his fourth. 
 
Another Matthew picked up the victory for the Lumberjacks. Matthew Someillan (W/2-1) earned his second win for the Lumberjacks. Someillan was stellar in relief of Irwin as he threw 4.1 shutout innings where he gave up two hits and struck out three. Meanwhile Cesar Valera tossed a perfect ninth in his lone inning of work out of the bullpen. 
 
The Turks were held to 3-for-31 at the plate in the 9-1 loss to the Lumberjacks.  
 
Covington is now 3-1 thus far against Harrisonburg this season. The two teams still have four games left to go against one another, including this Thursday night at Veterans Park in Harrisonburg.
