From Monday, June 24—Wednesday, June 26, Alleghany County Parks and Recreation hosted Basketball Camp for local youth. While the camp was initially going to be held at Alleghany High School, it was moved to Clifton Academy due to a scheduling conflict.
Head Coach for the Alleghany Cougars’ boys’ basketball team, Seth Bradley, was on site to talk briefly about this year’s turnout. According to Bradley, about 40 signed up this year compared to the 35 who signed up last year, which, he says is typical. Volunteers alongside Bradley included, but are not limited to, girls’ head Varsity basketball coach Jeff Wolfe, Varsity boys’ players Chase DePriest, Tucker Phillips, and Aaron Smith, and Varsity girls’ player, Kelsey Nicely.
Alongside Bradley were several volunteers, including coaches and a few varsity Alleghany Cougar players from both the girls’ and boys’ teams. The purpose of basketball camp is to teach local youth, aged 7-14, about basketball utilizing their potential future coaches and current players, who all selflessly volunteer their time. For those who are already familiar with the sport, it gives them the opportunity to advance their skills and learn valuable tips with which they can use for the duration of their basketball career.
During Basketball Camp, the players and coaches ran drills, practiced dribbling, had scrimmage games, practiced shooting, and learned many other basic basketball skills and terminology. The camp is held every year, with this year running for a total of three nights, three hours each night, and costed $30.
