WAYNESBORO – Looking to snap their recent two-game losing streak, Covington fell short of what would have been an incredible comeback following their 9-6 Valley Baseball League loss this past Sunday against Waynesboro at Kate Collins Field.
Trailing 5-1 entering the top of the eighth inning, the Lumberjacks cut the deficit in half on an RBI triple from Spencer Williams (1-for-5) and an RBI groundout from Thomas Marsala (2-for-5).
The Jacks’ who had been struggling putting runners in scoring position through the first seven innings, seemed to finally have momentum on their side.
However, the home team had other ideas. After seeing their lead get cut in half during the top of the inning, the Generals exploded with four runs in the bottom of the inning. With one out Cesar Morillo (1-for-5) got both the runs back on one swing as he ripped a two-run double to put the Generals back ahead by four runs at 7-3. Elijah Borjas (2-for-5) and Cole Hales (1-for-4) would add RBI’s as well in the inning as the lead extended to six runs at 9-6.
Now down to their final three outs Covington put their lead-off batter on base with a single. With one out and a runner on, the Lumberjacks would get back-to-back singles from Jorge Santana III (2-for-4), and Quentin Jenkins (1-for-4). With the bases now loaded and only one out in the inning, Dariel Castillo (2-for-5) hit a two-run single to bring the Jacks’ closer. One batter later, Marsala reached base on an RBI single and also put the potential tying run on base.
After starting the inning trailing by six runs, Covington was now one swing away from a potential tie game. With two outs and runners on second and third base Kaleb Henry (1-for-5) hit a ball hard to the outfield but was not far enough as he flew out to end the game.
Nate Scott (W) earned the victory over Covington after pitching sensationally in six innings. Scott allowed one run on just three hits and struck out five. Waynesboro had three batters with a pair of RBIs.
Carlos Escobosa (L/0-2) suffered the loss for the Lumberjacks. In just his second appearance of the season, Escobosa allowed three runs on five hits in only three innings pitched.
The Covington offense was held to only three hits in the first six innings before collecting eight hits from the seventh inning on. Castillo, Marsala, and Santana III, all had a pair of hits for the Lumberjacks. Castillo led the team with two RBI’s.
