STAUNTON – Paul Allegree “P.A.” Shelton Jr., 81, husband of Elizabeth (Biggs) Shelton of 728 Aintree Place, Staunton, departed this life on Monday, Nov. 2, 2009 in the University of Virginia Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul A. Shelton, Sr. of Hillsborough, N.C.; his mother and step-father, Pauline K. and Stephen A. Sales Sr. of Clifton Forge; a very special great-uncle, William Kern and three brothers-in-law Rex Biggs, Doran Caldwell and Robert Smith.

Born in Clifton Forge, March 7, 1928, he was a graduate of Clifton Forge High School. He served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954, was employed by the C & O, Chessie System and CSX Railways, retiring after 44 years of service. He was a member of the Clifton Forge Chapter of the B.P.O.E. for more than 55 years. Known for his sense of humor, P.A. was a dedicated husband, father and friend and will be greatly missed.

Mr. Shelton is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth “Libby” (Biggs) Shelton to whom he married on Nov. 2, 1956; a daughter, Leslie Carol Shelton of Staunton; and two sons, Michael Steele Shelton of Staunton and David Carson Shelton of Richmond; two brothers, Allen B. Sales and his wife Mary Ann and Stephen A. Sales Jr. and his wife Jan, all of Clifton Forge; three sisters-in-law, Elsie Smith of Fredericksburg; Mildred Caldwell and Mildred Cornell Biggs, both of Covington; brother-in-law, Lacy Biggs of Covington; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

A memorial service will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday in the Bethany Presbyterian Church, 2501 Fifth Street, Staunton, by the Rev. Robert R. vonOeyen Jr.

The family will receive friends following the service in the church Fellowship Hall.

It is suggested that those desiring make memorial contributions send them to Bethany Presbyterian Church, 2501 5th Street, Staunton, Va. 24401 or to the Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 2566, Staunton, Va. 24401.

Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
