On the morning of Friday, May 17, Alleghany High School (AHS) hosted “Signing Day” in the school library. It was the fourth straight year that AHS hosted Signing Day and invited teachers, parents, and press to come honor its student participants. According to the event emcee, Seth Bradley, this year’s turnout was the biggest the school has had since it first held the event four years ago.
Signing Day is a celebration of students who have opted to get jobs over the summer following graduation in preparation for their future in college or chosen career path. In years past, Bradley stated that the school typically called each student up one by one. However, with the event bringing in a record-breaking 25 students, the participants were brought up in 6 group clusters and introduced one-by-one within that group. Afterwards, they all sat at a library in front of an eager picture-taking crowd and signed a “Commitment to Excellence” form.
The “Commitment to Excellence” form is the student’s promise to always do their best in the future. It is their solemn commitment to “use the talents they have combined with the knowledge they have acquired to be the best they can be.” After each student signed their form, they paused momentarily to allow members of the crowd to snap a quick photo.
Lunch was then served in the library to all who came out to join in the event. Several students, parents, and teachers chatted away about the event’s successes over a quick meal before the seniors returned to their classes.
