Eight seniors from Alleghany, Bath County and Covington high schools have been awarded a total of $272,000 in scholarships by The Glencairn Foundation, which was formed in 2009 from funds received from the estate of an anonymous donor.
The scholarships are for $8,500 per year for four years, a total of $34,000 for each recipient.
Scholarships totaling over $2,859,000 have been given from 2010 through 2020, the years the foundation has made grants.
The scholarships were announced recently by Clifton Forge attorneys James D. Snyder and R. Meade Snyder, trustees of The Glencairn Foundation.
Recipients of the scholarships, and the schools they will attend this fall, are:
• Alleghany High School: David Palmer Donnan (Yale), Travis Scott Fridley (Virginia Military Institute), Abby Marie Hicks (George Mason University) and Jasmine Lakinna Thornton (James Madison University).
• Bath County High School: Gabriele Grace Herscher (James Madison University).
• Covington High School: Cailin Michelle Johnson (Radford University), Isaac Anthony Joseph Ruano (Old Dominion University) and Shawn Allen Shiflett (Longwood University).
The scholarships are awarded solely on the basis of merit in academic achievement, citizenship, leadership, extra curricular activities and community involvement.
Recipients must major in one of the following areas of study in college: art, dance, drama, economics, English, history, journalism, languages, music, philosophy, political science, psychology or sociology at a non-profit, accredited, four-year college or university.
Jim Snyder said scholarships from The Glencairn Foundation will be awarded annually to qualifying students from Alleghany High School, Bath County High School, Covington High School and Boys’ Home.
The recipients are selected by a scholarship committee at each school and by the trustees. Due to the Corona-virus pandemic, photos of the recipients were unavailable this year.
