HOT SPRINGS – The Pioneer District goes through Bath County.
The Chargers, who are the reigning district girl’s tennis tournament champions, look to keep their momentum going which happened at the midway point of last season into the upcoming 2024 year.
The Chargers are coming off of a 7-6 overall record where they lost 5-0 to Grayson County in the Class 1, Region C first-round.
While Bath County fell short of their goal of a regional title, winning the district tournament was an amazing accomplishment for a team that had zero district wins during the regular season.
The Chargers turned their season around with a 6-3 district semifinal victory over Narrows, whom they lost twice to during the regular season.
They then knocked off then undefeated Parry McCluer 5-4 in the district finals.
Senior Sadie Alphin is one of four players returning for the 2024 season. Alphin, who was a junior last season, posted a 14-3 singles record which included a third-set tiebreaker victory over Addisen Roberts in the district title game.
BCHS will look to use a balance of their senior leadership that includes Abbey Phillips (15 wins) and underclassmen to continue to ride that momentum that occurred late last season. The Chargers have nine players this coming season.
Back for his fifth season, head coach Kris Phillips will look to push the Chargers to the next level this year with the plethora of talent featured on his team.
The 2024 campaign will kick off for Bath County on March 18th with a home contest against Buffalo Gap. The Chargers will play eight matches, four non-district and four district.
