What a week it’s been. After the weather knocked out power for many residents in Alleghany County, closing schools and postponing sporting events, the time had finally come for the Alleghany Cougars to take on the Patrick County Cougars during Thursday night’s home game in the AHS gymnasium.
Patrick County got off to an early lead, putting up two two-pointers before Alleghany got on the board. Eli Entsminger was first to score, hitting both free throws after being fouled by Patrick County. Not long after, Xzavier “X” Hayslett got a two-pointer of his own. Then another, and —later in the first quarter— yet another. About midway through the first quarter, the score was tied, 7 all. That was as close as Patrick County would come to the ferocious Alleghany Cougars.
By the end of the first quarter, the Alleghany Cougars led 22-9. By halftime, they widened the margin further to 43-22. Hunter Depriest came alive in the latter end of the first quarter and kept the fire cooking the entire time he occupied the court, leading his team in scoring, nailing 14 points by himself.
At the end of the third, the Alleghany Cougars doubled their points over Patrick County, leading 58-29. Patrick County would only score three points in the final quarter, while the Alleghany Cougars added 10 more points to their final score. At the end of the game, the Alleghany Cougars defeated the Patrick County Cougars 68-32.
Perhaps the most notable thing to take away from the game was that 10/13 players put points on the board during the game. That’s close to 80% of the team! When you have that many players capable of nailing shots who also fare well at keeping the opposition from doing the same thing, then you’ve got yourself a recipe for success and we sure are seeing it!
Individual Scoring:
H. Depriest 14, Hayslett 10, Jordan 9, Caldwell 6, Entsminger 6, Turner 6, Harden 5, J. Smith 5, Brown 4, Webb 3
