On August 9 around noon, 4 police cars- 3 Covington City, 1 Alleghany County- showed up on N. Monroe Ave. in Covington. Two officers parked in front of the Virginian Review Office building on the corner of Locust and Monroe, while the other two parked on the other side of the underpass. As it happened, a tractor-trailer driver attempted to navigate his truck beneath the narrow underpass, barely avoiding getting wedged in. Officers were on the scene both to help control traffic and direct the driver, who successfully was able to turn the truck around. “If he kept going, he would have been [stuck],” one officer said. Had the driver become wedged in the tight spot, it would not have been the first time. Two weeks ago, on July 25 in Norfolk, a tractor-trailer was lodged beneath a similar underpass, blocking traffic for hours. Ironically, the Norfolk police department shared a photo of the incident that day- around noon. (Jennifer Bailey Photo)
