WOODSTOCK – The struggling Covington Lumberjacks snapped their four-game losing streak on Sunday, July 10th as they held off a late rally to defeat the Woodstock River Bandits on the road 9-7.
With a six-run deficit entering the bottom of the ninth inning, Woodstock pushed across four runs to cut the lead to just two runs. Two of the runs came at the expense of outs being recorded.
Despite giving up four runs (three earned), Tanner Walker remained in the game for Covington. After falling behind 3-0 to Ryan Wilson, Walker would get him to line out to shortstop Ranciel Ventura to stop the rally and end the game.
After falling behind 3-0 early on, the Lumberjacks grabbed their first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning and then took the lead in the fifth behind a five-run inning in large part to three defensive errors committed by Woodstock.
Covington would add two more in the top of the seventh inning on a two-run home run from Victor Sanchez. It was Sanchez’s third homer of the season. Sanchez led the Lumberjacks with three hits and three RBIs in their win over Woodstock.
Jacob Heath picked up his second win of the season after tossing four shutout innings out of the bullpen for Covington. Heath gave up a pair of hits and struck out seven in the win.
Brady Whitacre led the River Bandits with two hits in three plate appearances, while Hunter Smith had a team-high two RBI’s.
In the win the Lumberjacks recorded a season-high nine steals. Sanchez led the team with a season-high four steals, while Kendry Noriega had three steals.
