Lisa Richards, a Covington High School teacher for nearly two decades, is now a published author. Her children’s book, Follow Your Heart: How Owllen Discovered his True Calling, is set to be released later this summer.
Before writing her book, Ms. Richards has enjoyed —and continues to enjoy— a very impressive career. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree at Concord University in Business Administration, and her Masters at Marshall University in Teaching. She’s been a teacher for the past 24 years, working at many different schools including JRTC, a middle school in Huntington, Marshall University, and Covington High School. She will be at Alleghany High School in the Fall teaching Family and Consumer Sciences. Since receiving her library certification and has been “surrounded by books,” her interest grew in writing a children’s book.
In Lisa Richards’ book, Follow Your Heart, the titular character, Owllen —a “bright-eyed” owl— does not know what he wants to be when he grows up. Readers get to follow along on his many journeys as he seeks his life mission. Along the way, his mother asks him a pivotal question: “What is your heart telling you to do?” It is this question which points Owllen in the right direction.
Richards, sat down to talk about the inspiration behind her published manuscript. On the page where Owllen speaks to his mother, Richards said, “This is from my mom, Virginia Lemons. She always told us to follow our heart… It’s not a day that goes by I don’t think of her and her always saying that to us.”
Lisa Richards’ colorful and inspirational book will be released in print on August 8th in Barnes and Noble bookstores and will sell for $14.99. Additionally, digital copies are available online at bookbaby.com and on Amazon for $9.99.
