WAYNESBORO, VA – Playing on the road Tuesday, June 6th, the Covington Lumberjacks (2-3) snapped their three-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over the Waynesboro Generals at Kate Collins Field.
The biggest hit of the game occured in the sixth inning. With the score tied 2-2, Covington’s Wesley Parker smashed a solo home run (first of the season) to put the Lumberjacks ahead 3-2. The home run was Parker’s only hit of the game.
In the top of the ninth inning the Lumberjacks added an insurance run to take a 4-2 lead. WIth a run 90 feet away at third base, Luke Smith hit a fly ball deep enough to left field that scored Trent Turner.
Trailing by a pair of runs now, Waynesboro brought the potential tying run to the plate following a leadoff double from Luis Ramirez. Austin Newton, who had just come in for the ninth inning for Covington, settled back and retired the next three batters to pick up his first save of the season.
Michael Pavelchak led the Lumberjacks with two hits and also had a run scored. Gregory Melo went 1-for-5 at the plate while leading the team with a pair of RBIs.
Jacob Havern pitched a solid outing on the mound for Covington. Havern finished the game with a no-decision after allowing two runs on three hits in five innings. Jacob Heath picked up the victory in relief of Havern. Heath tossed three scoreless innings where he gave up two hits and struck out three.
