LOW MOOR, Va. (VR) –  Alleghany Highlands Public Schools will dismiss students early today due to a power outage and communication system challenges. Schools will follow an orderly dismissal schedule to accommodate bus transportation needs and ensure students can be transported home safely.

The dismissal schedule is as follows:

  • 10:15 a.m.: Alleghany High School (AHS), Covington Middle School (CMS), Callaghan Elementary School, and Sharon Elementary School.

  • 11:15 a.m.: Mountain View Elementary School and Jeter-Watson Elementary School.

In this situation, both our power and one of our backup generators failed.  This situation required extra time to activate our communication systems.  During power failures, our voice-over-IP phone systems do not work normally.

As always, AHPS staff will keep students supervised until they are safely dismissed.

AHPS appreciates the patience, understanding, and cooperation of parents, guardians, staff, and the community as schools work to ensure an orderly dismissal.
