CLIFTON FORGE, Va. (VR) – Although Clifton Forge High School merged with Alleghany County High School 40 years ago, the Mountaineer Green and Gold spirit remains alive and is demonstrated in the rapidly growing Clifton Forge School High School Friends Facebook group, created 6 years ago by former Clifton Forge resident Michael Wright.
Wright started the page with the intention of having an online place for friendly conversation among those who attended the Clifton Forge Public School System.
“Life happens,” said Wright of the 6 years that the group lay dormant. When, last month, the group popped up in his Facebook feed and surprised him with 250 members who had joined while he was away. Wright then resolved to turn the social media page into something fun for former CFPS students that “would spark happy memories through stories, photos and Clifton Forge trivia.”
“There was a very close-knit culture at CFHS from 1928-1983, and this group has become the perfect way to celebrate the school’s history,” said Wright. The CFHS Friends Facebook page consists of a student of the day, teacher of the day, some Clifton Forge trivia and even some humor and motivational thoughts. “Recently a song of the day became an added feature as music evokes such vivid memories,” said Wright.
Former students are asked to discuss daily posts, as well. “Discussion has been lively; members seem excited to participate,” added Wright.
Wright noted that the Clifton Forge Alumni Facebook group is another online option for CFHS-related conversation. “Whereas they are good about posting obits and notes about class reunions, I want to take people on a fun trip down memory lane,” said Wright. He believes a partnership with the alumni group would help get the word out about their events as his group has grown from 250 to 800 members in the last few weeks.
“As new members are welcomed to CFHS Friends, they are always instructed to check in each day,” said Wright. His “hook” to get members coming back for more is, “You ain’t seen nuttin’ yet.” And, “that seems to be working,” said Wright in conclusion.
Wright graduated from CFHS in 1977. He attended James Madison University and shortly thereafter relocated to the Carolinas. He retired from a pharmaceutical career in 2016 and currently resides in Charlotte, North Carolina.
