HOT SPRINGS, VA – In a wild evening between two Pioneer District rivals, the Bath County Chargers (4-9/4-6) were 5-4 walk-off winners over the Highland Rams (5-5/8-8) Thursday night.
Down to their final three outs of the game and trailing by a run, Cam Lowry reached base on a fielding error to start the bottom of the seventh inning. Cooper Lowry then singled to put two runners on-base. Two batters later and after Ca. Lowry stole third base, Brayden Gibson plated the tying run on an RBI groundout all while advancing Co. Lowry to third base. Greyson Walton, who already had two hits, delivered his third and biggest hit of the game on a 1-and-2 count as he drove the ball to center field which scored the game-winning run.
Along with Walton’s three-hit day at the plate, Co. Lowry had three hits, while Wyatt Campbell had two. Gibson and Walton both had two RBI’s.
Hunter Ryder, who started on the mound for the Chargers finished with a no-decision after lasting 6.2 innings. Ryder gave up four unearned runs on three hits, walked one, and struck out six. Ethan Persinger who relieved Ryder with two outs in the seventh inning, recorded the final out of the inning and was credited as the winner.
The Chargers had a 4-3 lead going into the top of the sixth inning. Tristan Carpenter with his only hit of the game, drove in the tying run with an RBI single. One batter later, with one out Michael Campbell gave the Rams their first lead of the game as he recorded an RBI on a fielder’s choice ground out.
Zach Armstrong took the loss for the Rams. Armstrong gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits in 1.2 innings after he relieved John Wagner who was the team’s starter on the mound. Wagner gave up three runs on eight hits across five innings. Wagner walked one and struck out seven.
The Chargers host Parry McCluer on Tuesday.
