COVINGTON, VA – After an 0-2 start to their season, the Covington Lady Cougars (5-3/2-0) varsity softball team is starting to heat up.

Following their 10-0 Pioneer District victory on Tuesday over the Eastern Montgomery Lady Mustangs (5-4/2-2), the Lady Cougars have now won five of their last six games.

Kayla Bartley (W/1-for-2) was dominant on the mound for the Lady Cougars as she pitched a one-hit shutout in a shortened five-inning game due to the VHSL mercy rules. Bartley through her five innings struck out five and did not allow a walk.

The offense was backed by Taylor Stayton (1-for-3) who had a three RBI performance at the plate, while Lexi Dressler (2-for-3) added two RBI’s. Meanwhile, Tyra Rose (2-for-3) also had a pair of hits to match Dressler for a game-high. Addison Morris (1-for-3) also had an RBI in the team’s win.

Alexis Artrip (1-for-2) had the Lady Mustangs only hit of the game which happened in the games first at bat. Following Artrip’s double, Bartley retired the next 15 Lady Mustang batters. Mary Miller (L/0-for-2) suffered the loss after allowing 10 runs (seven earned) through four innings. Miller also gave up nine hits, walked four, but did strike out eight.

The Lady Cougars look to keep the momentum going this evening when they host Narrows at the Jackson River Sports Complex at 5:00 p.m.
