COVINGTON, Va. – One more crosstown-rivaled sport has come to an end.
As Alleghany and Covington High School meet up for sports during one final go around for spring sports, the clock is ticking on that final matchup for each sport in which they play against one another.
This time the crosstown rivalry that concluded was on the soccer field.
The Alleghany Mountaineers (2-2-1) capped off the regular season sweep of the Covington Cougars (0-5) this past Monday following an 8-0 shutout victory at the Jackson River Sports Complex.
The Mountaineers were led by a trio of players who scored multiple goals. Aly Jua’rez, Hayden Knighton and Xzavier Hayslett each had a two-goal performance. Jua’rez and Hayden Knighton continued to pace the Mountaineers, much like they have throughout the season thus far as they each knocked in their fifth and sixth goals of the season.
In all, the Mountaineers finished with five players scoring goals, as Hunter Knighton and Halen Lowman provided the team with one goal each.
In their first meeting one week ago, the Mountaineers were 6-1 winners over the Cougars.
On Wednesday, the Mountaineers hosted Nelson County, while the Cougars are off until Monday, when they visit the Buffalo Gap Bison.
