The Alleghany Mountaineers (5-0) are cruising right now during the first month of the 2023 season as the team remains unbeaten following a 6-2 road victory over the Riverheads Gladiators.
Anthony Webb (W/1-for-3) was solid on the mound for the Mountaineers as he picked up his second win of the season after going the distance pitching seven innings where he allowed two earned runs on four hits, while walking three, and striking out two.
Eli Weese (1-for-3) led the Mountaineers offense with two RBI’s, Chris Harden (2-for-3) and Garrett Via (0-for-2) each provided RBI’s as well, while Conner McPeek (3-for-4) led all batters with a three-hit performance.
The Gladiators had four players who each had one hit a piece, while Brendon Fortune (1-for-3) provided the teams only RBI. The team used three pitchers across seven innings. Holden Fitzgerald (L) suffered the loss as he allowed two earned runs on three hits, while walking two. Even though he took the loss, Fitzgerald did strike out 10 Mountaineer batters.
Following two scoreless innings, the Mountaineers struck first on the scoreboard with two runs in the top half of the third inning. After advancing to third base on a wild pitch, Harden scored the game’s first run on an RBI groundout by Via. In the process McPeek, who was also on base following a single, had advanced on the groundout to third base. During Wyatt Griffith’s (0-for-4) at bat, McPeek would score the second run of the inning on a wild pitch.
In the home half of the third inning, the Gladiators would get a run back. With two outs and a runner just 90 feet away from home plate at third base, Fortune singled home Brody Phillips (0-for-2) which cut the lead in half to 2-1.
The Mountaineers would get the run back in the fifth inning with a little help from the Gladiators defense. With Weese on second base, he would come in to score the team’s third run of the game on a fielding error during Via’s at bat.
Leading 3-1, the Mountaineers would break the game open with a three-run sixth inning all coming with two outs. Harden provided an RBI double, while Weese added a two-run single to give the team a 6-1 lead.
Down to their final three outs, the Gladiators had a rally in mind. Camden Huffer (1-for-3) doubled to open the inning. Levi Dunlap (0-for-2) would come up next and had drawn a walk which put two runners on base. During Carson Kuhn’s (0-for-3) at bat, Webb threw two wild pitches which advanced Huffer to third base and home plate. Webb though would settle down and got both Phillips and Logan Austin (1-for-3) to ground out to end the potential Gladiator rally.
The Mountaineers swept its regular seasons series with the Gladiators. The team was a 15-1 victor over the Gladiators back on March 17th.
The Mountaineers will have seven days to prepare for their next game as they wrap up their three-game road trip with a visit to West Virginia next Tuesday as they play Greenbrier East. The Mountaineers defeated the Spartans 14-8 on March 15th.
