STAUNTON, VA – In a pitching dual on Tuesday evening, the Alleghany Lady Mountaineers (3-1) rallied in the later innings to pick up their third win of the season following a 6-4 victory on the road against the Riverheads Lady Gladiators.
The Lady Mountaineers only had four total hits in the win which came from four different players. Kaidence Nicely (1-for-1) had the biggest hit of them all as she pinch hit in the sixth inning and delivered the go-ahead two run single which put the team up 6-4. Abbie Fridley (1-for-4) also had an RBI.
In her first start on the mound this season, Savannah Cash (W/0-for-4) picked up the win as she went the distance pitching seven innings where she gave up four unearned runs on six hits and walked one.
Maggie Robertson (2-for-4) led all hitters in the game with a two-hit, one RBI performance for the Lady Gladiators. Leah Bryant (1-for-2) added an RBI coming off of a solo home run.
Destiny Good (L/0-for3) matched her opponent Cash on the mound by also going the distance by pitching seven innings. Good suffered the loss after allowing six runs (two earned) on four hits, while striking out 10.
After the Lady Gladiators struck first on the scoreboard following a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning, the Lady Mountaineers answered with two runs in the top half of the second inning to take the lead. A throwing error by Good allowed Kendell Keene (1-for-3) to score the tying run for the Lady Mountaineers, which was then shortly followed by Kaylee Nicely (1-for-3) scoring on a passed ball.
The Lady Gladiators would retake the lead in the bottom of the third inning following a three-run inning which was highlighted by Bryant’s solo home run which put the team up 4-2.
In the top of the fifth inning, two defensive errors for the Gladiators helped lead to the tying runs crossing the plate. Fridley tied the game on a two-out RBI triple in the inning.
With the score tied at 4-4, Kai. Nicely delivered the biggest hit of the game with a two-out two run single that put the Lady Mountaineers ahead 6-4.
Looking for some momentum to start their final at bats, Olivia Lyszaz (1-for-3) singled to open the inning which put the game’s potential tying run at the plate. Cash settled down and got the next batter Kallie Poole (1-for-3) to ground into a double play. Just as Cash ended any hope of a Lady Gladiators rally, Montana Deming (1-for-2) would single with two outs, which once again put the tying run at the plate. With two outs, Robertson, who already had two hits, hit the ball hard, but not deep enough as she flew out to center field to end the game.
The Lady Mountaineers and Lady Gladiators split their regular season series. The win on Tuesday was a redemption victory for the Lady Mountaineers as they had lost at home 16-4 back on March 17th.
Next up, the Lady Mountaineers return home on Thursday for a meeting with the Roanoke Catholic Lady Celtics.
