STAUNTON, Va. (TVR) – The Covington Cougars’ (0-3) varsity baseball team remained winless on the season following a 10-0 shutout road loss on Monday evening to the Riverheads Gladiators.
It was the Gladiators’ second win over the Cougars in just the last five days. The Gladiators defeated the Cougars 15-1 at Casey Field last Thursday, March 16.
The victory was a bounce-back win for the Gladiators, who lost 15-1 in Low Moor on Friday against Alleghany.
Trevor Lilly (2-for-3), Ethan Fitzgerald (2-for-2) and Grady Campbell (2-for-3) each had two hits apiece for the Gladiators, while Lilly and Campbell each had multiple RBIs. Camden Huffer (1-for-3) also provided the team with a two RBI performance.
The Gladiators’ pitching staff was backed by Lucas Edward and Brendon Fortune (W). The duo combined for five innings of work on the mounds, as they each gave up two hits each, while each walking one. Fortune struck out seven, while Edward fanned two.
Landon Arritt (2-for-2) provided half of the Cougars hits, as they finished with four hits total. Trey Cook (1-for-2) and Ethan Martin (1-for-3) each had one hit.
Garrett Carper (L) took the loss after giving up nine runs (even earned) on eight hits while walking three. Dylan Williams pitched 0.2 innings, where he surrendered one unearned run on two hits.
Following a two-run first inning from the Gladiators, in which both runs came with two outs due to an error and a wild pitch, the Gladiators added two more runs in the second inning once again via a wild pitch and a walk.
With a four-run lead, Campbell provided the Gladiators with an RBI single in the fifth inning to put the team up 5-0.
Looking to put their first run on the scoreboard in the top half of the fifth inning, with two outs, Martin singled, which advanced Eli Dressler (0-for-1) to second base and in scoring position. However, the two-out rally would end after Fortune got Luke Conner (0-for-3) looking at a called third strike.
Leading 5-0, the Gladiators would end the game via the mercy rule in the home half of the fifth inning following a five-run inning. The inning was highlighted by a two-run single from Lilly. Campbell would end the game on an RBI single several batters later.
The Cougars will look to bounce back on Wednesday when they’re back on the road visiting the Roanoke Catholic Celtics at 5:00 p.m.
