A couple of campers from Maryland wound up with their truck blocking both lanes of Route 629 and their 41’ trailer stuck in a ditch the afternoon of Tues., Feb. 28. The Virginia State Police arrived on the scene along with the Douthat State Park Police to control traffic that included an Alleghany Highlands Public Schools’ bus that was blocked from turning. Traffic was rerouted across a field that is part of the Buckhorne Country Store and Campground until Dwayne Dean, owner of D.P. Dean Construction, LLC, arrived on the scene with his Terex PT-80 that he used to lift the rear end of the trailer out of the ditch enough to allow the driver to back away and clear both lanes of Route 629. The elderly man who was driving the truck that was pulling the camper managed to back away from his predicament without injury, but his camper suffered substantial damage to its rear end.
