In non-district varsity girls basketball, the Alleghany Lady Mountaineers (4-0) remained unbeaten on the season following their Wednesday night home victory over the Craig County Rockets (0-4) 45-19.

The Lady Mountaineers opened the game by going on a 21-0 scoring run.

Abbie Fridley who scored a season-high nine points got the game going as she scored the first five point by knocking down a three-pointer and layup.

Leading 7-0, Zamera Hayslett who entered the game having only made one three-pointer, would knock down back to back three’s that put the Lady Mountaineers up 14-0. Hayslett finished with seven points scored.

After Kelsey Nicely knocked down a pair of free-throws, Kendell Keene connected from three-point range to put the Lady Mountaineers up 19-0.

The scoring run would come to an towards the end of the first quarter as Kallie Fisher dropped in a layup. Alexis Brookman would knock down a a free throw and jump shot to close out the quarter for the Rockets as they ended the quarter on a 5-0 run.

The Rockets run at the end of the first quarter would just be that, a distant memory as Bryce Leitch opened the second quarter by knocking down one of her game-high three three-pointers which put the Lady Mountaineers back ahead 19 points. Leitch finished the game with a game and season-high 15 points.

Following Leitch’s three to start the second quarter, both teams would struggle putting points on the scoreboard the rest of the half. The Lady Mountaineers would only make two total baskets in the second quarter with the other coming from Fridley, while Leitch and Hayslett rounded out the second quarter scoring for the team by each hitting a free-throw.

The Rockets who struggled as well in the second quarter only managed three points, while making just one field goal. There was a total of 10 points scored in the second quarter.

The Lady Mountaineers had a 28-8 lead at the end of the first half.

In the third quarter, the Rockets scored the quarter first four points to the deficit down to 18 points, however that would be the closest they would get within the Lady Mountaineers as they would go on a 9-0 scoring run to build their lead to their then largest at 25 points.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Mountaineers held the Rockets to just five points. It was the second game in a row that the Lady Mountaineers did not allow their opponent to score double digits in any of the four quarters.

Early in the fourth quarter Leitch knocked down back to back three-pointers which built the Lady Mountaineers lead to as high as 27 points.

Keene finished the game with six points, while Nicely added in a season-high eight points.

The Lady Mountaineers knocked down eight three-pointers and went 6-for-8 at the free-throw line.

Brookman and Fisher each had five points to lead the Rockets in scoring.

The Lady Mountaineers are back home this evening as they host the Covington Lady Cougars at 6:00 p.m.. The Lady Mountaineers defeated the Lady Cougars last week 51-12 at the Cougar Den in what was both teams season openers.
