The Mountain Gateway Lady Roadrunners (1-7) entered Saturday’s home game against Northern Virginia CC Nighthawks (0-3) having lost their first seven games.
Several of those game, the team lost by 30+ points.
However, that was at the beginning of the season.
In two of their last three games, the Lady Roadrunners have pushed their opponent to its limit.
In what is a historic season for the program as it’s their first season at MGCC, the Lady Roadrunners girls basketball team was due.
After being blown out at the beginning to growing together as a team and coming up just short, the Lady Roadrunners on Saturday picked u the programs historic first victory as they defeated the Nighthawks 77-28.
Led by Covington native, Cristi Persinger, she recorded a game and season-high 28 points to help guide the Lady Roadrunners to their first win.
Persinger finished the game with a double-double as she brought down 10 rebounds, along with five assists and four steals.
The Lady Roadrunners finished with three players picking up double-doubles; Persinger, Rebecca Ferguson, and Brooke Davis.
Davis scored a season-high 23 points along with 12 rebounds, season-high nine assists, and season-high six steals, while Ferguson scored 10 points and brought down a season-high 18 rebounds. Stacy Tacy added a 11-rebound performance.
Trailing 8-5 in the first quarter, the Nighthawks closed an early five-point deficit down to three points following Latasha Settles three-pointer.
It would be the closest the Nighthawks would get within the Lady Roadrunners as they would score 11 straight points that ended with Persinger dropping in an open layup which caused for a Nighthawks timeout.
The Nighthawks would close the gap in the second quarter to five points at 21-16, but much like the first quarter, the Lady Roadrunners would go on an 18-0 scoring run to end the first half.
Persinger scored 13 of her game-high 28 points in the second quarter where she went 6-for-11 from the floor.
That scoring run would continue over into the second half.
The Lady Roadrunners would score the second half’s first 12 points as they scored 30 unanswered points to take a 51-16 lead.
Taliah Busby made a free throw with 3:22 left in the third quarter that ended the Lady Roadrunners 30-0 scoring run.
Prior to Busby’s free throw, the Nighthawks had been scoreless for 11 minutes and 38 seconds, which saw a five-point deficit be built to a 35-point deficit.
The Lady Roadrunners held their opponent to a season-low 14.3% shooting and forced a season-high 29 turnovers.
Settles scored 25 of the Nighthawks 28 points, while Busby scored the teams other five points. Settles made all eight Nighthawks field goals, while the rest of the team shot 0-for-32.
The Lady Roadrunners will look to keep the winning-momentum going this Saturday when they are at Virginia Peninsula. The Lady Roadrunners lost to them nine days ago at home losing 61-58. The Lady Roadrunners had been down 16-points entering the fourth quarter before almost completing the comeback.
