PURCELLVILLE, Va. (VR) – The Covington Lumberjacks dropped a 7-3 road decision to the Purcellville Cannons after the hosts used a five-run stretch over the fourth and fifth innings to pull away. Covington took the early lead in the second inning when Chris Carroll singled home Jake Ambrosio for a 1-0 advantage.
Purcellville answered in the third as Shintaro Inoue doubled in an unearned run to tie the game before breaking it open in the fourth. Ryan Gargett delivered an RBI double, and Ethan Acevedo followed with a two-run single to give the Cannons a 4-1 lead. The Cannons added two more unearned runs in the fifth after an error extended the inning, pushing the margin to 6-1.
The Lumberjacks got one back in the sixth when Jacob Levesque singled home George Pardo Jr., cutting the deficit to 6-2. Purcellville answered in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly from Josh Ibe to restore its five-run lead. Covington scored the game’s final run in the ninth as Frankie Clark singled to plate Emory Stephens.
The Lumberjacks finished with eight hits. Clark led the offense by going 3-for-5 with an RBI and two stolen bases. Carroll was 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Levesque went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Stephens scored twice, reached base twice and added a stolen base.
Luke Richards took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits over four innings while striking out four. Aniel Berbes surrendered two runs in one inning, Deundre Jones allowed one run in one inning, and Robert Boing worked the final two innings, allowing no runs while striking out one.
Covington finished with three runs on eight hits and committed two errors. Purcellville scored seven runs on seven hits and also committed two errors.
