Thacker Pays Visit To Neola
Sam Thacker, alleged moonshiner, wanted in Alleghany County for shooting four officers at Flinn, Bath County, about four weeks ago, was seen at Neola, W. Va., Tuesday according to Greenbrier County, W.Va., officers. Prohibition Officer George E. Sprague, one of the four officers wounded at Flinn, and a member of the West Virginia state police, are investigating every chance report which comes to them regarding the present whereabouts of the hunted man. These officers were in White Sulphur, W. Va., yesterday, and are said to be planning a renewed effort to capture Thacker and the three Scott brothers, Jess, Basel and Angus, who escaped from the Lewisburg jail and are believed to be in hiding with Thacker.

The United States called off its proposed test launching of the Gamma baby moon last night only 50 minutes short of the target hour. The combination of a series of minor difficulties forced postponement-particularly a leaky disconnecting valve-and a bad break on the weather.

Artificial Heart “Working Beautifully”
A retired dentist, his artificial heart pumping steadily and “working beautifully,” is sitting up, asking questions and talking to his wife as his health improves, doctors say. Clark, 61, the first recipient of a permanent artificial heart, was in critical condition but without complications today, a hospital spokesman said.

White House Rejects Denials From Baghdad
The White House said Thursday it possesses solid evidence that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction, and rejected Bagdad’s denials, saying they have no credibility. President Bush, asked if the United States was headed toward war, said: “That’s a question you should ask to Saddam Hussein.”

First Snow Of The Season
Warren Kegley(pictured below) throws salt on the sidewalk in front of Rupert Real Estate on Main Street in Covington Wednesday morning. The Alleghany Highlands remains under a Snow Advisory until midnight tonight with snow accumulations i of 1-3 inches forecast. As much as four inches are possible in the highest elevations. Schools were closed in Bath County today, while students in Alleghany County were released two hours early. As of 10:45 this morning, Covington schools were operating on their normal schedule.
