COVINGTON, Va. (VR) - The Covington Lumberjacks and Olde Town Covington have joined forces with the Christmas Mother and Salvation Army for a teddy bear drive. Fans attending Saturday’s 6:30 p.m. home game are encouraged to bring a new or gently used teddy bear to donate. Additional information is available at oldetowncovington.com. Photo: Elizabeth Kirby

COVINGTON, Va. (VR) — The Covington VA250 Celebration opened Thursday evening at the Jackson River Sports Complex. Crowds began lining up before gates opened at 6 p.m. and quickly filled the midway. Rides provided by Coles Amusements drew steady lines throughout the evening, while food vendors served a variety of fair favorites.
The celebration continues Friday and Saturday. Gates open at 6 p.m. each day and admission is free. Ride tickets are available for purchase on site. The event concludes Saturday night with a fireworks show. Photo: Christopher Mentz, VR

Shriners And Football Fans Off To Roanoke
The annual pilgrimage of followers of the gridiron, which wends its way toward Roanoke from this city each Thanksgiving, started today, with still others leaving early tomorrow morning by automobile for the Magic City. The crowd was augmented by many Shriners, who will attend the ceremonial to be put on in Roanoke by Kazim Temple. The ceremonial promises to be a gala affair, and quite a number of local Shriners will be on hand to enjoy the fun.

The White House announced today President Eisenhower, on his own motion, signed and initialed some government documents. Eisenhower is under treatment for what his physicians describe as an occlusion or blockage in a brain artery. The popular term for that is a slight stroke.

Wilder Commision Supports Allowing Governor’s Re-Election
A state commission on streamlining government on Tuesday endorsed a constitutional amendment to allow Virginia governors to seek re-election. Another former governor, Jim Gilmore, also signaled his endorsement. Virginia is the only state in the nation in which governors are prohibited by law from serving consecutive terms.

Bush Says He Worries About A Failed Mideast Process
President Bush expressed concern Tuesday about the risk of failing in the first major Mideast peace talks in seven years, warning that could spawn a generation of radicals and extremists. Still, he said, “It is worth it to try.” Bush cautioned it would take time for Isrelis and Palestinians to reach an agreement. The goal is to reach an accord within 14 months by the end of Bush’s presidency.
