Giants Win First Game Of The World Series
The Giants took the first game of the world series from the Yankees, 5 to 4. In the ninth inning when the dusk had fallen, Casey Stengel slapped a drive far over the left-field wall for a home run which broke up the game and gave the Giants a victory. In the third inning the Giants scored four runs, overcoming a three-run lead the Yankees had accumulated, which seemed to clinch the victory.

Enrollment In White Schools Has Increased
Alleghany’s 25 schools have the largest enrollment in their history, according to an announcement by Superintendent A.L. Bennett. Statistics as to the student body at each of the schools during the first month were received last week at the superintendent’s office. There are in the white schools 4,605 children, or an increase of 42 students over the 1936 enrollment. The colored schools have a loss of 17 pupils. This is a net gain of 25 children over the end of the first month last year.

Covington Girl Remains Missing Despite Search
A search for 18-year-old Carolyn Bell Price of Covington, who disappeared from the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center last Thursday so far remains unsuccessful. Her relatives said in a telephone conversation at 11 a.m. today that they have no new information about her beyond what is in the morning papers and that she has not been located. Her parents are Mr. & Mrs. L.E. Price of Rockbridge Avenue.

Clifton Forge Shriners Hold Parade
Approximately 1,800 people lined the streets of downtown Clifton Forge Saturday morning to view the annual Shriners Parade. Marching units, bands and special units from Roanoke appeared at the parade, sponsored by the Clifton Forge Shrine Club. The parade is the beginning of events for the annual Fall Foliage Festival, to be held Friday through Sunday in Clifton Forge.

First Christian Church Celebrating 100th Anniversary
First Christian Church, in Covington, will celebrate its 100th anniversary with special activities and services Saturday and Sunday. The Church is located at 231 East Fudge Street and the Rev. Bill Gilliland is the current pastor of the church. Gilliland has served as the pastor of First Christian Church since 1986. Frank Yost has served as the church’s youth minister for the past nine years. A catered banquet will be held Saturday at 6 p.m. in the church’s Family Life Center. A fellowship breakfast reception will be held Sunday at 9 a.m., with a praise and worship service following at 10:30 a.m.
