The Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce & Tourism held a ribbon-cutting celebration for the reopening of Twinks 220 Diner Iron Gate at its new location in Iron Gate on Thurs., Aug. 11.
Twinkles Simmons Kay cut the ribbon inside the diner at its new location located across U.S. 220 in Iron Gate from the diner’s original location.
The booming business at her original diner created the need for more seating, and Kay opted to move to the building across the road where Amerigas had been operating until COVID-19 resulted in the company shutting down its location in Iron Gate.
It took just over two months to complete the move and restore the building that was a restaurant at 208 5th St. before Amerigas rented the building.
Now she has a modern-day facility that features double the seating capacity of her original business across the street, including a separate room for private parties.
After graduating from Clifton Forge High School, Kay graduated from Tidewater Community College with a degree in culinary art.
Twinks 220 Diner Iron Gate features home-cooked meals, and Kay remarked, “I’m loving my new place, and I invite the public to come and visit.”
Teresa Hammond, executive director of the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce & Tourism, was on hand to welcome everyone, and Dr. John Rainone, the chamber’s president, was also on hand to provide his welcoming remarks.
Other officials in attendance were Mayor Chuck Unroe of the Town of Iron Gate, Bob Umstead, vice-mayor of the Town of Clifton Forge, Tom Sibold, Mayor of the City of Covington, and Matt Garten, chairman of the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors.
The diner is open Tues. through Sat. 11:00 a.m. till 8:00 p.m., and a special buffet is available on Sundays from noon till 6:00 p.m. The diner remains closed on Mondays.
