LOW MOOR — The Alleghany Highlands Public Schools Board has appointed Amy R. Dew as interim assistant principal at Mountain View Elementary School.
The school board made the appointment on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, during a called meeting. Dew will serve as the interim assistant principal at Mountain View for the 2022-2023 school year.
She replaces Devan Nicely, who recently resigned to accept an administrative position with Buena Vista Public Schools as principal at Enderly Heights Elementary School. Dew has 33 years of experience in public education. She was serving as an assistant principal at Clifton Middle School when she retired in June 2018. She had previously served as principal of Boiling Spring Elementary School.
At Mountain View, Dew will serve under Mallory N. Thompson, who was recently appointed principal of the school. Thompson was named principal after serving as a social studies teacher at Alleghany High School since 2014.
“Amy Dew has made many contributions to our community over the years, and we are honored to have her can-do and cooperative spirit assisting us at Mountain View Elementary School. She will be a great asset to the team as we move forward together and has wonderful skills that will help us meet the needs of children, families, and staff,” said Superintendent Kim Halterman.
Prior to becoming a school administrator, Dew taught at Clifton Forge West Elementary School and Mountain View Elementary School. She served as the principal at Boiling Spring Elementary School for four years. When the school closed in 2013, she moved to Clifton Middle School and served as an assistant principal until her retirement. Following her retirement, she continued to serve in schools as a substitute teacher.
“We are excited to have such an experienced administrator who is willing to help provide us with some continuity at Mountain View. We wish Dr. Nicely all the best with his new career opportunities and we welcome Ms. Dew back to our team. We are excited for Mrs. Thompson and her team at Mountain View and we look forward to seeing them hit the ground running when students return on August 17,” said Jacob Wright, chair of the Alleghany Highlands Public Schools Board.
Dew, the daughter of the late Norman and Barbara Rice of Clifton Forge, received her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from Radford University. She holds a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and a master’s degree in education leadership and supervision.
“I am excited with the opportunity to support the faculty, staff and students at Mountain View in the upcoming school year,” Dew said.
The school board expects to appoint a permanent assistant principal at Mountain View for the 2023-2024 school year.
