The Covington Lumberjacks (13-16) have been in five doubleheaders this season.

Outside of their first doubleheader back on June 12th against the Purcellville Cannons in which the Cannons swept the doubleheader, the Lumberjacks have split their next three doubleheaders.

On Monday with another doubleheader looming, the Lumberjacks once against split their doubleheader with the Strasburg Express.

With the doubleheader split, the Lumberjacks ended their losing streak at three games following a 5-3 game one victory.

In the nightcap of the doubleheader the Express jumped out with three runs scored in the first inning off of a three-run home run from Zane Denton (2-for-4).

Following the home run from Denton, the Express didn’t look back as the team held the Lumberjacks to just three hits in a 6-2 victory.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lumberjacks had an opportunity at tying the game after they had two runs cross home plate thanks to a fielding error. With the tying run at second base and the go-ahead run at the plates, Yehoshua Garcia (W, 2-2) would get the Express to escape the inning by striking out Luke Arnold (0-for-2) for the final out of the inning.

The Express would get the two runs back in the sixth inning and added one more in the seventh to grab a four run lead.

In the loss, Baird, Cole Ketzner (1-for-2), and Nate Stocum (1-for-3), each had a hit for the Lumberjacks.

In his sixth start of the season, Aaron Potter (L, 2-3) suffered his third loss of the season after giving up five runs on four hits, while walking four and striking a season-high five batters in five innings.

In the first game, the Lumberjacks edged past the Express 5-3.

After taking an early 3-0 lead following a three-run third inning, the Lumberjacks would rally with a five-run fourth inning.

The Lumberjacks had six hits total in the game, but had five in their five run fourth inning. After two runs scored on RBI’s from Stocum (1-for-1) and Arnold (1-for-3), Baird (2-for-3) would follow with a game-tying RBI single. With one out, Michael Piulats (1-for-3) would put the Lumberjacks ahead with a two-run single to give the team a 5-3 lead.

With a two run lead, starter, Landon Lucas (W, 1-0) did his thing on the mound for the Lumberjacks as he would shutdown the Express the rest of the game. Lucas in his fourth start, had his best start of the season as he pitched a complete game where he allowed three runs (all unearned) on three hits, while walking five and striking out three.
