The Covington Lumberjacks (8-10) opened the 2022 Valley Baseball League winning their first three games before losing 10 of their next 12 to fall to 5-10 on the season.
After a few wins over the weekend, the Lumberjacks picked back up where started off the season.
On Sunday after collecting their eighth win of the season following a 5-1 victory over the Woodstock River Bandits (13-7), the Lumberjacks increased their win streak to match their season-high with the team’s third straight victory.
In what was scheduled to be an afternoon doubleheader, the teams were able to only get one game in before the second was postponed. There currently is no makeup date for the second game.
John Schroeder (0-for-2), and Justin Breen (1-for-3), each had RBI’s in the second inning to put the team out in front 2-0 after a pair of innings.
Leading by two runs, John Urena (3-for-3), led the top of the fifth inning by crushing a first pitch solo home run which put the team ahead by three runs at 3-0. The home run was Urena’s first of the season. It was also Urena’s first RBI of the season.
In the sixth inning, the Lumberjacks were gifted with their fourth run of the game following a wild pitch that put the team ahead 4-0.
The Bandits lone run came around to score in the bottom of the sixth inning, in which the team cut their four run deficit down to three runs following a fielder’s choice.
While the Bandits managed just one run for the game, the team did bring the potential tying run to the plate with only one out in the sixth inning. Facing a potential rally, Aaron Potter (W) would get Tristian Moore (0-for-3) to pop out to left fielder Cooper George (1-for-4), who then threw out Jacoby Long (1-for-3) at home plate for the 7-2 double-play to escape the sixth inning jam.
After the Bandits cut into their deficit in the previous inning, the Lumberjacks grabbed the run back in the seventh inning on George’s on hit of the game coming on an RBI double.
The Lumberjacks collected 12 hits in the win. The team was led by Urena and Luke Arnold (3-for-3), whom each had a three-hit game.
Coming into the game on Sunday, Arnold had not had a hit in his previous 16 at bats stemming across six games. With his three-hit performance against the Bandits, Arnold matched a season-high as he put together a three-hit game against the Harrisonburg Turks in an 8-7 loss on June 10th.
Meanwhile, Schroeder, collected his third RBI of the season. It was the third straight game where Schroeder had an RBI.
The Lumberjacks were off on Monday and have an away doubleheader this evening against the Purcellville Cannons. The Lumberjacks are off on Wednesday, but will be back on the diamond on Thursday as the team’s road trip continues in Harrisonburg against the Turks.
