Senate Takes Up Labor Bill Passed in House
The Senate plunged into domestic problems today with Senator Taft(R-Ohio), opening debate on a labor dispute bill that even foes concede may be toughened before its expected final approval. In the role of a not-quite-satisfied sponsor, Taft, as chairman of the Senate Labor Committee arranged to bring before his colleagues a GOP answer to strikes and labor strife.

Pollution Ruling Avoided
The Supreme Court today stepped out of a suit by 18 states against big auto manufacturers and concluded that nationwide pollution cases are best handled by lower courts. The immediate effect of the unanimous decision is to slow a drive by the states to force the manufacturers to install anti-pollution equipment in all 85 to 100 million autos built by them between 1953 and 1969.

WWI Vet Celebrates His 100th Birthday
Former U.S. Army Private Jerry Smith of 301 S. Marion Ave., Covington, believed to be the only surviving veteran of World War I in the Alleghany Highlands, is celebrating his 100th birthday today at his home. He is the oldest living member of the Curtis A. Smith 116th Infantry Post 1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Covington, and in this capacity has appeared in the past three Covington Labor Day parades. Smith was born April 23, 1897, in Covington, the son of the late Miles and Martha Hooker Smith, and was the oldest of 10 children.
Pioneer Days Set For May 2-3 In Covington
The annual Pioneer Days, sponsored by the Alleghany County Department of Parks and Recreation, will be Friday and Saturday, May 2-3 in downtown Covington from 9 am to 5 pm each day. The festival includes lots of exhibits and food such as baked goods, funnel cakes, pork rinds, barbecue, taco salads, steak and cheese sandwiches, snow cones and more.

Beyond Budget Fight, A Vital Issue Lurked
Beneath the political drama of last week’s Senate standoff that nearly derailed the state budget for the third time in two months lurked the overlooked issue of sustained Virginia transportation funding. The Senate’s 20 united Democrats took a black eye Tuesday when they initially blocked passage by demanding more money for the Dulles rail project in the Democrat-friendly suburbs of Washington, D.C. They lost when one of their own switched his vote Wednesday, allowing the budget to pass.
AHS’ Gorham Shines At Radford Relays Invitational
Alleghany’s Leonta Gorham has been dominant on the track the past two years for the Alleghany track team and he made a statement this past Saturday at the Radford Relays. The AHS senior took first in the boys 100(11.25), 200(23.15) and long jump (21-71/2), while placing second in the triple jump (41-61/4) and third in the 400(51.87).
