Farm Prices Expected To Remain High
Keen American appetites for plenty of good food and a willingness to pay for it are helping to hold farm prices at high levels. The Agriculture Department so reported today, adding that this heavy domestic demand is getting considerable assistance from expectations that exports may be “peculative buying” in the grain markets.

Air Force Rescues Lindbergh By Plane
Charles A. Lindbergh and Philippine scientists stranded in the jungle with a colony of 20th century cave dwellers were evacuated Sunday by a U.S. Air Force helicopter. Lindbergh, the American who made history 45 years ago with the first nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic, was smiling broadly after the unexpected end to the 11-day expedition.

Secret City Hall, Library Plans Fall Through
Covington Mayor Jim Crawford revealed Tuesday night six months of confidential negotiations between the city and Charles Pickney Jones Library over a plan to convert city hall to library use have fallen through. Crawford said council is still committed to a plan to renovate city hall for governmental purposes and build a new addition for police department use. Meanwhile, the library’s board of directors is back to its plan of expanding the library building on Riverside Street.
Alleghany Building Project To Be Completed By March 1998
Debbie Loope, executive director of the Alleghany Highlands Housing Alliance, told City Council Tuesday that the Alleghany Building is scheduled to be finished March 2, 1998. The building will have 13 one-bedroom apartments, six two-bedroom and four commercial units on the first floor. The cost will be $2.3 million.

Vine Cutting Ceremony
The Boy Scouts of America Order of the Arrow, in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service, hosted a “vine cutting” ceremony Saturday afternoon to commemorate the completion of the Peters Ridge Trail. Several of the scouts who worked on the project, along with Forest Service representatives, local government officials and representatives from the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism gathered at the trailhead on Dolly Ann Road in Alleghany County for the ceremony
Lady Chargers Win Red Division At Botetourt Bash
Bath County, the reigning Group A, Division 1 softball champions, made another statement this past weekend by winning the Red Division at the Botetourt Bash. En route to winning the title, the Chargers knocked off three Group AA schools, their fourth victory over a Group AA school that week after knocking off Alleghany 2-0 last Tuesday in Hot Springs.
