Virginia Tech Dining Services is a key partner in the university’s effort to reduce food waste. Dining currently sends about 300 tons of food waste and compostable service ware each year to an off-campus composting facility, material that could eventually be processed at the planned facility at Kentland Farm. The Covington Cougars (1-9) girls basketball team had no answer for Eastern Montgomery’s (6-5), Lilly Underwood, who scored a game-high 23 points, in the Mustangs 50-11 victory on Tuesday night in the Cougar Den.

The first game back from the holiday break wasn’t so easy for the Cougars.

The Mustangs, controlled the tempo of the game from start to the finish with defensive pressure to their fast breaks. The Mustangs played well on both ends.

In the opening quarter, the Mustangs took an early 8-0, which caused the Cougars to take their first timeout.

Following the timeout, Cristi Persinger, put the Cougars on the scoreboard, which ended the games scoring drought for the Cougars at four minutes.

One minute later, the Mustangs grabbed six unanswered points to take a 14-2, which prompted another Cougars timeout.

The Mustangs ended the first quarter, on a 13-0 scoring run to take a commanding 21-2 lead.

Just last week, we saw the Mountaineers rally from 19 points down to beat Staunton.

That though, would not be the case for the Cougars, as the Mustangs continued their unanswered scoring run into the second quarter to take a 30-2 lead. The team went on an impressive 22-0 run.

With under a minute to go in the first half, Persinger, ended the Mustangs scoring run with a basket to cut the game to 30-4.

The basket from Persinger, ended an 11 minute scoring drought for the Cougars.

The Cougars went into the second half down 32-4.

In the second half, Underwood, scored 11 more of her game-high 23 points to help maintain the Mustangs double-digit lead.

The Mustangs, finished with three players in double figures scoring.

Lauren Bragg and Persinger, each had four points for the Cougars, while Bragg had a game-high nine rebounds. Kayla Bartley, finished second on the team in rebounds with six for the game.

The Cougars struggled from the field shooting. As a team, they were 5-for-36 from the field shooting, while going just 1-for-4 at the free throw line.

The Cougars were back on the basketball court last night, as the team traveled to Bath County to take on the Chargers.

You can read all about that game in Saturday’s edition, or you can head online to our website virginianreview.com and read the game story before then.
