Virginia Tech Dining Services is a key partner in the university’s effort to reduce food waste. Dining currently sends about 300 tons of food waste and compostable service ware each year to an off-campus composting facility, material that could eventually be processed at the planned facility at Kentland Farm. The carpentry program at Jackson River Technical Center is a three-year program designed to prepare students to work in the building trades and provide the foundation for qualified graduates to progress into supervisory or ownership positions.

Carpentry theory is taught in the classroom followed by hands-on experiences in the shop.

Under the guidance of Leonard “Buck” Ray, students learn entry-level skills along with work site safety. They are taught to safely and efficiently use hand tools, power tools, power equipment and building materials and supplies.

Students learn scale drawings, reading and interpreting building plans and home design concepts, plus other entry-level skills needed for construction jobs.

During the three years in the carpentry program, students become familiar with a variety of other occupations like masonry, plumbing and electrical. Generic and specific social skills, required of workers, are taught along with the integration of academics and vocational education to make learning more relevant and meaningful.

Many students have used their technical education as a stepping stone for further education, to have careers in architecture, engineering, construction management, insurance adjusting, construction estimating and more.

Carpentry students at JRTC have earned educational and industry achievements including awards in Skills USA competitions.

JRTC is proud to have past graduates that have created their own businesses in this community. They are important parts of our community working hard to service and take care of our needs.

Jackson River Technical Center would like to hear from past graduates working in their field of study. Please contact JRTC by calling 862-1308 so that the center can update its contact information and network with you in the near future.

The best time to reach instructors is during their planning period 2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.

JRTC extends an invitation to past graduates and members of the community to attend an open house from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 29. Please come and see what current students are learning for their futures in our community and beyond.
